I’ve discovered how to achieve that super-duper narrow depth of field like you get with medium format (the Martin Schoeller look) without having to buy an 85mm f1.2 or use a Mamiya 6×9 camera …. the secret … use a macro extension tube!
The 85mm f1.8 only focuses close enough to do a head and shoulders… put a short 12mm extension tube on the lens and I am able to almost completely fill the frame on a full-frame Canon 5D camera.
Since DOF is controlled by three things: F-stop, focal length, and distance to subject…. the extension tube allows me to get even closer to the subject = super narrow depth of field. Your focus has to be EXACT though or else you ruin the photo.

Star gazers look through telescopes at planet Venus during a “star party” as part of the Winter Light Festival held at Astotin Lake in Elk Island National Park on February 28, 2009. Photo by Ryan Jackson/Edmonton Journal
I got this idea from the Strobist DVD and also from the amazing Planet Earth series. Sometimes you have to photograph something in the dark but if you use a flash you will lose that “darkness” look. Solution: Put the light BEHIND the subject and rim light them. Here I set a 550EX flash and a pocketwizard begind the telescopes and people. It looks much nicer than “front light” and still keeps the mood of night time.

Take a 360-degree panoramic view of the Edmonton Oilers dressing room. Mouse over the jerseys to learn about each number. Panorama by Ryan Jackson/Edmonton Journal
I spent WEEKS on this panorama. 2-hours here and there to figure out how to embed the HTML text hotspots and then eventually input all the pictures and information. Thanks to Joanne Ireland for doing the research on each player for her story that ran in today’s Oilers Supliment. I eventually want the panorama to contain all of the Oilers numbers and the names of every player that wore an Oilers jersey. Baby steps though… this one took long enough!
