A composite photograph of teams Ferbey, Middaugh, Koe, Simmons, Martin, Gunnlaugson, Stoughton and Howard competing on Dec. 6, the opening night of the 2009 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Olympic curling trials in Edmonton. Journal photographer Ryan Jackson took more than 300 photos in half an hour, then chose the best 48 to blend together for this composite.
To order a copy of this picture, call 780-429-5580 or go to edmontonjournal.com/reprints.
This photo is best viewed BIG which is why I’m so happy the Journal gave me a FULL COLOUR PAGE for this photo as a commemorative poster. Pretty cool!

Edmonton Journal Editor-in-Chief Allan Mayer poses for a photo with the vast piles of letters to the editor the Journal has on file in Edmonton on December 3, 2009. Photo by Ryan Jackson / Edmonton Journal

I was asked to create an image to illustrate how many letters to the editor we get every year. We have a filing cabinet with over 13,000 letters in the office so I spent an afternoon setting up lights and moving everything around to make it perfect. As you can see from the image above, I used three speedlites a strobe and a 40×60″ reflector to light the image. I tethered my 5D to my laptop to preview the images. I also used my handy dandy Canon 24mm f1.4 lens at f11 / ISO 100.
The image I submitted to advertising only had levels and white balance done. The one you see above however was photoshopped a lot more using the “Dave Hill Look” work flow.
This is the second time I have used my new O-Flash which is a very
cheap knock-off of the Ray Flash. |
One of my favorite lighting tricks is to make a boom arm out of a
flash stand, a monopod and a bogen superclamp. Boom arms
really open up possibilities for light placement and you
probably already have a light stand and a monopod. |
Update: And here’s the result!

Ryan's Life
It’s pretty amazing what can happen in six months. I put a camera on the roof of the Coast Edmonton House Hotel back in April and let it take one picture every hour for over six months. Here are some of the most interesting images. You can view a whole gallery with dozens more and also view an interactive time lapse of the whole transition from winter to spring to summer to fall.

A beautiful view of the river valley in Edmonton on October 2, 2009. Edmonton Journal photographer Ryan Jackson placed a time lapse camera on the roof of the Coast Edmonton Hotel in early April of this year. The camera snapped one photo every hour for over six months and produced over 4,400 images. Here are some of the most beautiful, odd and interesting images captured. To see an interactive time lapse of the river valley transforming from winter to spring to fall go to edmontonjournal.com/photos. Photo by Ryan Jackson / Edmonton Journal

I was also very happy that the Journal gave me the ENTIRE FRONT PAGE on Saturday to show off my image. Pretty damn cool!

I got to go up in a helicopter and do some aerial photos of Edmonton back on Halloween. Wow are helicopters WAY better for aerial photos. You can make 10 times more pictures in the same time than in a plane.
