Think I’m ready?

Only 2 more sleeps until WARPED TOUR!!! I am still up North, but I fly back tomarow (I’m missing three days of work = $450 bucks to go to Warped. Stupid?).

I will be getting off the plane at 4pm and into the car and Murphy and I are driving to Calgary and “hopefully” catching the end of the fireworks!

Then at 1pm the next day (or 52 hours from now *tick tick tick*) it shall begin!
Needless to say seeing as I have 1 Gig of memory cards “the biggest update ever” will come this weekend so be sure to check back on Friday’ish and they will be up!

Till then. See you there, otherwise “wish you were here”.
June 28th, 2003

I had another rant for tonight but this happened and it made me think:

Tonight I went fishing. There was a softball game going on at the ball diamond against Rabbit Lake (the other “rival” Uranium mine) but I didn’t go because…well…softball brings back too many bad memories of throwing the ball and swinging like a semi-retarded little girl.

ANYWAYS, the point is that tonight one of the guys from the other mine got hit in the eye with the softball and there was tons of blood everywhere/ lets hope he doesn’t lose his eye.

Everyone is kind of shooken up here because it was a big deal and there was a lot of blood and they have to fly him out to LaRonge because he lost so much blood.

This brings me to wonder “what if I had played tonight”

I’m not thinking “I’m guilty for this happening” but I do think that if I had been there, something different would have happened. For example I would have changed the batting order and the time of all of the events would have changed.

Or I may have run for the ball a little faster/slower and that would have changed the way he would have gone for the ball too.

There are so many different things that would have happened had I been there and even though the same ball may have been hit by the same person, my presence would have some how changed the chain of events so that that guy wasn’t in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Makes me wonder about all of the other bad (or good) things in life that could have been different had just one little thing changed, like an extra person being there…

.

June 27th, 2003

There are a lot of shows going on. (Theres one tonight with DFA!). If you didn’t know that, then you aren’t checking the threeohsix.org calender enough!

I’m up North right now untill tuesday and then its WARPED TOUR!!!! so I’m not too bitter…

Man the Queen is hot up close!

Today’s
bitching is about commercials before movies in theaters.  Last night I went
and saw HULK at Pacific. Now as always there is about 15 minutes of previews and
commercials before a movie, and funny enough, often the previews are better than
the movie that you end up seeing. (I’m not saying HULK was bad. Go see it for
yourself)

What maddens (is that a word?) me is that there are Shampoo
commercials before movies. Why? Don’t we get enough drilling from Shampoo
commercials on TV that a movie theater should be the only place that we can
escape? I guess not. There is advertising everywhere. A lot of advertising is
very good and “mysteriously” gets you to buy their product because it is funny,
or well done, or makes you cry (like that Freedom 55 commercial with the kid
growing up and getting married *sob*) BUT all too often there are advertisements
that I think are just a waste of money.

For instance (of course there is an instance…) during elections there are
always posters up with pictures of candidates.  The poster is just a
picture of the person and a catch fraise like “a smart choice” or “looking out
for you”. These posters of course get the persons image and name in your mind
but how bout just a name and a quick list of what the person is going to do for
me if I elect him/her?

How bout instead of a hot chick having an orgasm while
shampooing her hair I am told what all those damn herbs in the shampoo will do
for my hair!    The next thing is advertisements in magazines for
clothing brands (Tommy, etc) where the ad is 99.9% sex/photo/art and you can’t
even tell what clothes they are wearing. I think I even saw an add in a magazine
last night where there was a person not wearing any clothes at all under a
waterfall and it was advertising a clothing brand!

Maybe I’m not as pissed off
at the advertising as much as it is the cost/effect.  Coming back to the
movie theater, I am sure it is super expensive to advertise in a theater and why
spend the money when we already see the commercial on TV 3-5 times a day?
Same with those super “artsy” ads in magazines with models and fancy
photography. Those ads probably cost tens of thousands of dollars to set up/
photograph and for what?

Next time you think about an advertisement you’ve
seen, think about the price/effectiveness of it. Just because they spent a lot
of money on the ad, doesn’t mean you can be suckered in to spending a lot of
money on the product. Quite often the cheapest/stupidest commercials work the
best (eg. “Wus up”, or “barqs has bite”) and the commercials with a bunch of
skinny models painted blue and making everything turn to ice is just a waste of
the advertisers money, and my time.

Some may wonder
why there are 6 sleds in my back yard in the middle of summer, but if you know
my family you’ll know it’s best not to question things like that!

.

.

Today I got “hired” to take pictures of two of my friends families for their
sisters Grads which was fun.  I video taped the one Grade 8 grad and while
I stood there, beside me was a little 2 year old girl WHO WOULDN’T SHUT UP! I
don’t know how many times her parents said “shhhhh” and even I was saying “shhh”
to myself because it was really annoying to have this kid talking gibberish
during a grad.  When I get married some day (despite Nolto) I am going to
offer a day care in the building for parents to dump there kids and the
invitation will say “parents with younger children and kindly asked to not bring
their children to the ceremony”

I seriously don’t think I have ever been to a
wedding where there wasn’t some screaming baby in the background.  If you
have a kid, and you know that it wont shut up, then invest $6.65/hr and get a
babysitter! You will save yourself embarrassment and not ruin other peoples
experience by having a screaming kid that wont shut up because it is bored and
you shouldn’t have brought it anyways!

You may have a right to go to a wedding
and see your friend/relative’s “beautiful ceremony” but you DON’T have a right
to ruin it for everyone else by bringing your screaming baby!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRITTANY!!!!

.

SCANDAL!!!!

A manager and a Lab tech here have been having an affair for years. Both have marriages back in Saskatoon that don’t know that they are having an affair when they are up North. His wife even picks up the guy at the airport and “the other woman” is standing right next to him and says goodbye when he leaves!

First off you have to wonder “how can they get away with this?” or “how do the other husband and wife not know about this?”

The answer and the crazy part is because EVERYONE HERE KNOWS about the affair, (the guy’s room is beside mine and wellÖ. lets just say he has a squeaky bed)

What bugs me is that no one has told the husband or wife what is going on. This made me think because “in our age group” if something like that is happening it always “gets around” and the other person finds out. Why is it different with adults? Is there some sacred anti-tattling law that you abide by when you’re old? Of course it is a touchy subject and who wants to be “the teller’ but still I can’t believe that a camp of 179 people, most of which know about what is going on can talk behind the “couples” back and say “ooooh they’re having an affair” and it be the gossip topic but meanwhile there is a husband, wife, family?, who is in the shadows?

Not that I’m going to be “the teller”Ö. But I’m just saying that I’m surprised someone hasn’t been yetÖ. You’d think somehow, someway “they’d figure it out”

June 18th, 2003

First off read THIS artical…

So 200 years ago the British crown bought 250,000 acres from the Indians for 10 shillings (equivalent to 120 cents). The funny thing is that the land the Indians sold is now Toronto!

So now “of course” the Indian Band (200 years later!) is suing the government because it was an “unfair deal” and they want market value for 250,000 acres! Experts figure this will be the biggest land settlement in history costing billions of dollars! My question is, why do they even figure it will settle?! I mean they still have the signed legal document entitling them to the land, as well it was Britain who bought the land (which became Canada) so why should Canadian Tax payers have to foot the bill? My mom was born in Toronto = me. I believe this is just the band trying to get money out of something that should be thrown out of court!

YES, obviously it was an unfair deal and YES it was wrong that they bought the land for $1.20 but it was 200 years ago! #1 If I sell my car to someone for $1.20 and then ask for more money because I sold it too cheap I am shit out of luck because I sold it already and that person got a good deal. #2 If I sold my car 200 years ago and there have been 10 generations since then that haven’t said anything then what right do I have now to ask for more money now?

The land the Indians sold went on to become Canada’s largest city with 5,000,000 people and it creates jobs, industry, money, power, and life for Canada = Good

Suing Canada for billions of dollars for the land would cost tax payers and take money away from more important programs = Bad

In conclusion my narrow, one sided, biased, uneducated opinion is that they shouldn’t get one cent and should be fined for wasting time just like that guy who sued General Motors $700 Trillion for “polluting the air” and ended up going to jail.

TOM UPDATED!

June 17th, 2003

The sun doesn’t go down here! It pretty much hangs out along the horizon and then goes back up. I usually don’t have trouble sleeping, but looking out my window reminds me of the movie Insomnia (of course I haven’t killed anyoneÖ..yet) but still it is weird never seeing night.

I took this picture at 11pm and I woke up at 2, 3 and 4 am this week and the sun was still up. I hate how in the winter it is dark when I catch my bus to school, I am inside all day, and then it is dark when I catch the bus at the end of the day. It is a nice change to be up North and never see the dark but stillÖ.

I know I’ve been slacking lately with the whole updating my website or “content” (c’mon I’m 600kms up North!) so when I’m boring always go to www.threeohsix.org !

…theres my plug-of-the-day

Also Tarrah and Nolto can update now so check back later and they have rants just waiting to upload!

June 15th, 2003

I just reolized that with the server change to my website my Waste people can’t update (I wonder if they even noticed…) so I’ll be fixing that tomarow but for now heres some “super cool pictures”:

June 14th, 2003

After getting my hair cut I have been asked several times “Did you get your hair cut?”

Now since I got an inch cut off it is obvious that I did get a haircut, so why do people keep asking me?

Perhapse it is just a way of saying “I noticed” but I think an appropriately sarcastic responce would be:

“No, I just combed my hair shorter today”

June 13th, 2003

All of the pictures of the Wednesday night show are up!  Go into the
fancy new BANDS section  to see the pics of Poser Disposer, Suck-Cess,
Untimely Demise, and Tombstone Diaries.

There are 13 broken links on my site right now (can you find them?!) so don’t
bother e-mailing me cuz I know all about ’em….

Anyways I’m back up North for another exciting week but I’ll still update so
check back later! Till then, enjoy the pics!

June 11th, 2003

I got Arlin to switch punkoryan.com over to the new server which will take
24hrs so….

If you want to see SUPER COOL BIKING then
click there < —

June 10th, 2003

Why hasn’t Ryan been updating lately?  He’s been working on moving
punkoryan.com over to a new server.  So that’s why… as well I DO have a
life you know…but anyways Nolto and Tom both updated so read their shit and
then check back here later… it’ll be super cool!

June 8th, 2003

So you should be looking at super awesome pictures of Goldfinger right
now but the show was canceled due to mechanical problems with their bus ( but
Ryan’s conspiracy theory is that they didn’t pre-sell many tickets because they
were $22.50!!! so they bailed on playing here because there weren’t enough
people….)

c’mon! $22.50 to see  Goldfinger and only one local band opening? what
do you expect?

June 4th, 2003

Maturity…

I work up North with adults. Most guys here are in their 30’s and 40’s. As I have ranted about before, I always thought that once you left High School immaturity will end. This has been my first job working with all full grown men and I always laugh to myself when I see how they all act sometimes like they were still back in High School. For example they all pick on the foreign guy who’s name I don’t even have room for. It’s not bad or anything, its just like how you would have joked with the exchange student in school. “Your European? You should see a doctor about thatÖ” or they all call each other Gay or play pranks just like in High School.

Of course there is nothing wrong with acting immature sometimes (I do it all the time!) but something I noticed todayÖ

Right now there are contract negotiations going on with the Union here because the workers have all voted to strike if action and pay raises don’t happen. The case has gone to Court and several Forman’s and managers have unfortunately had to go to court and testify either for or against the Union. The Power Engineer had to testify yesterday. He is a nice guy, but was required by law to testify against the Union.

There are two coffee rooms where we all have our breaks. One smoking, one non-smoking. There are usually only five or six people in the smoking room and the other dozen workers are in the non-smoking room. Today when the Power Engineer came into the room and sat down for coffee all of the Union workers one by one left the room and went to the other coffee room.

I felt sooo sorry for the guy because he had lost a ton of the respect that he had built over years with all the workers for testifying but he didn’t have a choice. It sickened me to see how a dozen full grown men could do the “silent protest” bullshit and leave the room when he came in. I am sure he already feels bad enough because he knows what he did.

I guess if everyone always got along and forgave and forgot there wouldn’t be any wars, etc and obviously that isn’t what human nature is like but stillÖ..Fucking grow up old men!

June 3rd, 2003

“listen”

I love drums. They set the pace for the music, they give a beat to the song, and they let you know what is going on in a song (e.g. Lead in to a guitar solo or the classic three ticks of the sticks to start off a song.)

Unfortunately I would say drummers are the least recognised musicians. They have to sit at the back of the stage, with their face hidden behind symbols.

I always take a ridiculous amount of pictures of bands when they play, but I only ever get 2 or 3 max of the drummer. Drummers are very hard to photograph due to being at the back of the stage, poor lighting, and hard to see them behind the drums.

I always feel sorry for the drummer, even though he/she is one of the most valuable members because “everybody plays guitar” but drummers are precious few when it comes to finding one for a band compared to finding a guitarist.

The bass player is also quite left out. Sure he/she is up front beside the guitar player and the vocalist but have you ever seen a crowd go wild after a wicked bass solo?

How bout this question: Have you ever heard a wicked bass solo?

I ask this because bass isn’t heard as much as any other instrument. I know I said that drummers are the least recognised musicians, but the bassest is the least heard musician, even though without him/her you would be wondering “what’s missing?”

I often find people who play bass are the only people who hear the bass. Several times I have heard people who play bass say “wow do you hear that? He is soo good!” or “I can’t believe how that guy plays bass”

Everybody else always raves about the “wicked guitar” or “sweet vocals” or “amazing drum solo” but unless the bass is the only instrument playing usually people don’t pay attention to it unless they play bass and have an ear for it.

With that in mind. The next time you listen to music or see a band take a second to “listen” to each instrument individually. I absolutely love listening to CD’s on other peoples’ stereos or using different headphones than my own because every stereo reproduces the sound differently. Some stereos make different instruments sound louder which may help you hear the song better.

I always get excited when I hear something new in a song that I never noticed before like an extra instrument, or a different guitar riff that I never realised was there. Next time you are listening to one of your favourite CDs read the booklet (assuming you bought the CD) and read the “special thanks” or “featuring” section to see if there is anything you never noticed before. For example the newest Voyd CD has Ryan Smith (setaside) screaming in the background at the end of Track 2. I had never noticed this before until I read that it was there and then listened to the song to try and hear it. Now I always hear it and it makes the song better.

Instead of “shutting your mouth and opening your eyes” (AFI) shut your eyes and open your ears.

June 2nd, 2003

punkoryan.com is moving over to a new server that will be shared with threeohsix.org
The transfer has happened while I am here up North therefor
there will be lots of broken links to videos and music and pictures till
I get back on Friday and fix the links. Till then read my review!

June 1st, 2003

I’m up North again till Friday but that doesn’t mean I can’t write!

Seeing as I work in Future Shop that is where I buy most of my
new CDís and a few days ago I realised there is a new Punk-O-Rama out!
Punk-O-Ramaís, along with the Fat Wreck Chord compilations have always been
something that all-punk fans, despite tastes all love.

I remember back in Grade 9 Bunnin lent me Punk-O-Rama III
telling me “take a listen to this CD you might like it” Ö and I did = Music I
listen to today = This web site (but lets not give Bunnin all the credit!)

I own Punk-O-Rama 1 thru 7 and so purchasing vol. 8 would be
logical as well as traditional.

The Punk-O-Rama compilations are a great way to discover new
bands and hear the best of what Epitaph has to offer. With that in mind, I must
say there are a few disappointments of Punk-O-Rama 8. If you want my opinion on
each track read the

FULL BORING REVIEW

but in a testishell (
face=Wingdings>?
did you get that?) there are some pretty lame tracks on
the compilation from some bands who shouldnít even be on a Punk-o-Rama.

For example Epitaph signed Sage Francis, and Atmosphere two
Hip-Hop groupsÖwhy?

I am a huge fan of diversity of music and I listen to
EVERYTHING but what the hell is hip-hop doing on a Punk-O-Rama?

Two other problems I had were that there weíre two Bad Religion
songs from the same album. Now Bad Religion is already huge and Epitaph doesnít
need to promote their album more than having only one song. A song from a
different, new, struggling band would have been better.

As well there is a remix of a very shitty Transplants song too.
The original Transplants song is also on the compilation, so why waste a song on
a remix when once again you could have put on another band?!

Speaking of the TransplantsÖwhat the hell?! Punk music has not,
will not and shall not use loops! The drums are looped, the techno is looped,
and the vocals are looped! Thatís not Punk, itís a nerd sitting at his computer
with 3 samples and a DJ program! I am boycotting the Transplants!

Anger aside, now for the REASONS YOU SHOULD GO OUT AND BUY
PUNK-O-RAMA 8

Ok, so originally I was going to write a lot more about how
this is the “worst Punk-O-Rama ever” and whatnot but I figured I should give it
a few more listens before jumping to any negative conclusions. Wasnít long
before I realised I had listened to it a half dozen times and I was starting to
love it just like all the other Punk-O-Ramas.

First off it is a DOUBLE CD with 32 tracks for $7.99 so you
canít go wrong for the money. Click

HERE
for all the tracks.

There is also a music video for Death By Stereo ñ Wasted Words
if you pop it in your cd-rom.

YES there is a lot of SHITTY SHIT that I wouldnít even shit
onÖ. BUT I did the math and I would say there are 24 good songs vs. 8 songs I
wouldnít shit on so its definitely NOT a waste of money (how many CDís have you
bought that cost twice as much for 1 song anyways?)

My favorite tracks would have to be the Distillers, Motion City
Soundtrack, F-minus, Turbonegro, Refused and Raised Fist but then again I may
have a more fast/hardcore taste than you so you may end up loving all the songs
I hate youíll just have to see for your selfÖoh and by the wayÖthe two Hip-Hop
songs are actually pretty decent, I just donít think they belong on a
Punk-O-Rama.

Just like everything else in life, Punk-O-Ramaís have changed
and become more mainstream in the last few years, but despite that they all,
just as with this one, are a great way to discover new bands, and add to your
