I bought a set of Kenko extension tubes last year but have only really used them for portraits so far. Today I finally got to use them for an insect. I used a 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens with a 12mm and 20mm extension tube on it. I used two flashes and shot at f22 so that I would have enough depth of field for the wasp to be in focus. Also note that this is a HUGE crop. I didn’t want to get too close to these little stingers
Today I went to a press conference with the typical dull-dim-tungsten spot lighting and a black background. Moving to the sides and setting my white balance to Tungsten made the beautiful daylight from the windows soak in and make some pretty photos. I set up a 550ex to the side with a 1/4CTO (a.k.a. Orange) gel on it pointed at the ceiling to give a nice highlight on the left side.
For the second photo I climbed up some stairs and shot with a long lens to bring one of the bright red pillars into the frame. Usually press conferences are just shot straight on with a black background and spot lights. It’s nice when you can move around and bring more light and colour into the photo.

All of the above panorams were taken with my “crazy rig” panorama camera. Three 1D’s with three Peleng 8mm fisheye’s all linked together. This allows me to push one button and all three cameras shoot at the same time allowing an instant 360-degree panorama. The rig ways a ton and there are a million things that can go wrong (all three cameras have to be the same settings, cords all have to work, batteries all have to stay charged, focus has to be the same, etc) but it allows me to make a 360-panorama without a worry of subjects moving between frames. A wonderful wedding in small town Eston Saskatchewan. I’ve been friends with Steve since before grade nine. It was so cool that the wedding was in a small town because so many people in the community offered up their homes and cabins for people to sleep in. It just seemed like everyone lended a helping hand. Here are some of my favorite shots from the day, including a few engagement photos from weeks before. You can see more in the Portfolio section.
Tamara Brown, the Woman of Vision for August, is the founder and owner of Ever Green Ecological Services. Fresh out of university, she and a friend started a little recycling subscription route with a pickup truck and trailer and quickly signed up 400 customers. Five years later, they have a staff of 50 and 40 full-size garbage trucks servicing 19 municipalities around Edmonton and are updating their processing plant to rival the City of Edmonton’s. She poses for a photo at the company office, 808 78 Ave. in Edmonton on July 13, 2009. Photo by Ryan Jackson / Edmonton Journal
To light these images I used a 48-inch umbrella on the left with a 580EX and I had a 550ex hidden in the background with a light green gel on it. I normally use the green gel for balancing my flash with fluorescent lights but in this case it worked well for making the light green background “pop” even greener.
There was a large translucent garage door off to the right bringing in nice soft daylight. The umbrella acted more as a fill light for her left side.
The image in front of the garbage truck was an accidental winner. I took a whole bunch of photos of her with flashes and the ONE image where my flashes didn’t go off turned out the best. Sometimes mistakes are better than intentions.
